The game takes place in Dunwall , imaginary city where technology and paranormal retrofuturistica coexist in the shadows.
The protagonist of the story is Attano Corvo , a former bodyguard of the Empress and trusted wrongly accused of his murder and the kidnapping of Princess Emily , leaving the plague -stricken city , and led by an oppressive military government and armed neo- industrial technologies .
The day before reaching the scaffold , Crow is however helped him escape from prison by some Empire Loyalists . These , led by Admiral Havelock , give the character a chance to redeem his reputation and rescue the princess Emily . Crow will use a mask to remain anonymous and will be equipped with paranormal abilities that will be donated to the Outside , a mysterious supernatural being and semi- divine. [3]
Crow is dedicated then remove the conspirators who killed the Empress and took power in Dunwall : the High Priest , the brothers Pendelton , Lady Boyle and Lord Regent , while the positions of power occupied targets are quickly occupied by the three leaders of the loyalists : the priest Martin becomes the new high Priest and Lord Pendelton gains influence in parliament and Havelock seems willing to become head of the militia. Completed its task , Crow is betrayed by Loyalists and poison it , but the boatman Samuel – who ferried Crow for places of Dunwall – saves him , giving him only half of the poison and loading it on a barge unconscious, but not dead . Corvo is found then submerged in the District , where he was taken prisoner by Daud , the murderess of the Empress. Defeated Daud , who escaped from the district and returned to the den of the Loyalists , Crow turns out that the three heads of the loyalists have killed almost everyone else with the intention of maintaining the power and took refuge at the Lighthouse Dunwall with Emily . From now on, the situation is different depending on the approach used and the number of killings and chaos created : in the case of low chaos , Havelock kill his two accomplices and then tackle Corvo , in the case of high chaos , Crow will kill all three Havelock and also try to commit suicide bringing Emily . Depending on the level of chaos and the survival or otherwise of Emily the game will have 3 different endings .

The game interface is similar to that of a first-person shooter even if the mechanics are kind of stealth and for many elements (including setting ) is very reminiscent of Thief: Deadly Shadows and the series of BioShock .
The plot evolves as a series of missions that the player has to play in sequence. However, within each mission there are a number of secondary objectives (and often hidden ) that generally help the performance of the main quest or give some background on the plot. Often the actions performed during a secondary mission is also reflected in later missions .
The execution of each mission can have different approaches , ranging from addressing their way every enemy that will be met , avoidance of any kind of involvement, using secondary roads or indirect methods .
However, the game is based on a system (similar to karma used by many games) in which decisions will have future consequences and that more blood will be spilled by the player and the game world will be more dark and hostile .
On the basis of this mechanism, the game provides three alternative endings .
The main actions of play are held by the two hands of Crow : With your right hand , Crow controls the main weapon, a special sword switchblade can be used both for direct combat that for stealth kills . The same , with a little ‘ of timing, is for making parades, with the possibility of rapid counterattacks able to kill enemies with one shot . Weapons and equipment can be upgraded by finding patterns in the world of gambling and buying them with coins , powers instead are affordable and upgradable spending Rune . Also in the game are special amulets of bone that provide new skills or enhance existing ones Crow .
